The palecological analysis of new material from the carbonate shallow water deposits of the Eastern Alpine Gosau Formation (Santonian), indicated different faciestypes with representative organism assemblages. Based on actualistic comparative parameters, algae, micro- and megafauna and including ichnofacies have been recorded (semi)quantitatively. With the help of the newly defined "paeneholistic concept" the data obtained were interpreted for the first time in a palaeobiological manner. Taking into account the colonization patterns and the "social structures" of the rudists which are characteristic of the alpinotype Upper Cretaceous, trend indicators are shown, allowing the classification of different reef types and reef-adjacent environments.
Different fossil taxa are proven to be recorded for the first time in the Eastern Alpine Gosau; Haddonia hagni n.sp. is described as a new species.
The inclusion of several more facial areas of the Mediterranean region which were equivalent to that of the Gosau area served as a check for the compiled palecological criteria. Numerous repetitions of the results were shown so that the basic principles would seen to be transferable to other similar examinations.
