Carbonate formations of the Lower to Middle Jurassic on the western edge of the Trento platform (Southern Alps, Italy). - This paper attempts a redefinition of the Lower to Middle Jurassic succession at the western edge of the Trento platform. The traditional sequence (Calcari Grigi / San Vigilio oolitic limestone / Rosso Ammonitico) should be replaced with the sequence Calcari Grigi / Massone oolitic limestone / Misone limestone / Tenno formation / San Vigilio oolitic limestone / Rosso Ammonitico. The Massone oolitic limestone, a new member of the sequence, concludes the neritic sedimentation cycle. The Misone limestone is formed from consolidated calcareous muds made up of siliceous sponges, sphinctozoa, radiolaria and spicules sometimes accompanied by belemnites, ammonites and solitary corals. The Tenno formation shows thin strata of siliceous limestones with turbiditic intercalations of biocalcarenites and oolitic limestones. The San Vigilio oolitic limestone is a resedimented prismatic or cuneiforme lithosoma with oolites of a radial or spongy structure, which interdigitates with Tenno formation. Sedimentological features indicate that San Vigilio oolitic limestone originate in the south or south-southwest. The possibility that they may originally derive form a Jurassic Po-valley platform is examined. The microfacies types of each formation is described. Distribution of the sequence is shown to vary between areas in the north and northeast where the sequence is incomplete and areas towards the south where the sequence becomes progressively more complete. This pointed to the existence of a palaeo-topographical east-west zonation which runs across the traditional north-south edge of the platform.
