Abstract

Litho- and biofacial analysis of drill cores and outcrops of the tertiary (Upper Oligocene / Lower Miocene), coal bearing, subalpine »Untere Brackwasser-Molasse« in Upper Bavaria (Federal Republic of Germany) enable the reconstruction of a complex depositional province and life realm under deltaïc conditions.

In particular sedimentary structures and stock of molluscs (28 genera of bivalves and 31 genera of gastropods) are investigated and paleoecologically analysed. Climatic conditions are reviewed, tidal effects are acertained in the bavarian »Molasse Sea« and a river mouth mangrove is postulated.

From the resulting facies interpretation the pecularities of the vertical development of the »Untere Brackwasser-Molasse« can be easily deduced. The presented mechanisms of sedimentation explain the cyclic structure of the investigated area.

Comparisons with the recent conditions at the Gulf of Papua/New Guinea support the elaborated facies interpretation.
