Allochthonous Urgonian Limestones (pebbles, allodapic limestones, olistolites) occurring in the middle part of the Northern Calcareous Alps have been investigated with respect to facies and palaeontology.
The pebbles witness a siliciclastic influenced carbonate platform ranging stratigraphically from Upper Barremian to Upper Albian / Lower Cenomanian. By the means of 29 different microfacies types the platform was reconstructed.
The stratigraphy is based on benthonic foraminifera, orbitolinids respectively as well as calcareous algae. The microproblematica occurring are of no stratigraphic importance, but are convenient to characterize different facies. In the systematic part numerous species are described for the first time from the alpine Lower Cretaceous. In comparison to the classical Urgonian of Southern France, the microfauna in the pebbles studied is much less diversified.
The palaeogeographic reconstruction has to take into account the restriction of these pebbles at the southern part of the Lechtal Nappe, in front of the Tyrolicum. The neritic sedimentation in the internal parts of the Northern Calcareous Alps is supposedly connected with an uplift of the most southern parts as a cause of either beginning subduction of the Penninic ocean in the North or the obduction of oceanic crust of the former Vardar ocean at the boundary Austroalpine / Southern Alps. The erosion and accumulation of the Urgonian Limestones was caused by multiphase compressional tectonism being in good accordance to existing plate models of the Eastern Alps. Together with other occurrences of allochthonous Urgonian Limestones in the Alpine-Dinaric region, an Urgonian belt bordering the western end of the Vardar ocean is postulated.
