Abstract

For the first time dinoflagellate cysts are described from Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene strata of the Helvetic and Ultrahelvetic realm from Upper Bavaria and adjacent areas.

Within the stratigraphic sequence Upper Turonian to Maastrichtian over 300 samples from 20 localities reveal more than 200 species and subspecies.

In addition to the new genus Raetiaedinium gen. nov. following 15 species are described as new: Achomosphaera fenestra sp. nov., Alterbidinium varium sp. nov., Areoligera guembelii sp. nov., Florentinia mayii sp. nov., Florentinia aculeata sp. nov., Glaphyrocysta wilsonii sp. nov., Isabelidinium weidichii sp. nov., Palynodinium biculleus sp. nov., Palynodinium helveticum sp. nov., Pervosphaeridium intervelum sp. nov., Pierceites? chiemgoviensis sp. nov., Raetiaedinium evittigratia gen. nov. sp. nov., Riculacysta amplexus sp. nov., Riculacysta? pala sp. nov., und Spinidinium eggerii sp. nov. Pervosphaeridium morgenrothii, Biconidinium reductum and Riculacysta semitecta are introduced as new combinations.

The semiquantitative distribution of genera and generic groups is drawn in circle- and distributions graphs indicating dinoflagellate cyst associations of different facies.

At least 6 zones and 4 subzones are established for the Upper Cretaceous of the Helvetic and Ultrahelvetic zone.
