In the central part of the Northern Calcareous Alps (NCA) Lower and Middle Jurasic sediments are examined in 149 sections. The aim of this study is to describe the facial, micro- and ultrafacial, sedimentological and paleontological inventory of the investigated series. By use of this data, models for sedimentation on passive continental margins are established, and compared with the geological development of DSDP site 547B, offshore Morocco.
The rocks of the alpine Lower and Middle Jurassic can be differentiated into red, grey or bituminous facies-types. These can be further subdivided into 16 lithologies with 44 microfacies-types, within 28 main-types. Trends of temporal and spatial fluctuations of the components and of the composition of the sediment-matrix are outlined.
Models for the genesis of selected lithologies (nodular limestones, black shales) were presented. The black shales of the alpine area can be subdivided into the Unken- and the Sachrang-Schichten. Their lithofacies is derived from warm, saline bottom waters.
After a short description and classification of the observed resediments, the geological development of the working area is outlined and documented on 6 Plates, exhibiting the studied sections. The resulting models for sedimentation exhibit interconnections of biological, tectonical and eustatic factors.
In the DSDP site 547B 7 lithologies with 9 microfacies-types are distinguished. The stratigraphic position of the intervallum core 14 to core 7 is revised by means of micropaleontological investigations. After describing the sedimentary history of this site, the sedimentary environments of the early Atlantic Ocean and of the NCA are compared.
In the paleontological section of this work the calcareous nannoplancton (43 species), radiolaria (32 species including Archaeocenosphaera steigeri n. sp.) and foraminifera (93 Species, including Spirplectammina lobitzeri n.sp. and Berthelinella hermi n.sp.). In the stratigraphial part of this work their temporal distribution are presented in detail.
Furthermore microproblematica, rhyncholiths and ichnofossils were described.
